Somatic Sex Therapy

Why sex therapy as a focus of somatic psychotherapy?

To use Socratic questioning and answer a question with a question: What could be more somatic than sex? In the physiological aspect or “body sense,” sex connotes the idea of two beings joining together in erotic pleasure. In the psychological and “felt sense,” sex plays a powerful role in human bonding. Both physical and emotional sexual connection can lead to stronger relationships with ourselves and with others.

Dr. Richmond practices from a sex positive perspective, namely, all sex is good sex as long as it is consensual and pleasurable. Consent and pleasure are both body-based and emotional experiences, and thus fit directly into her somatic sex therapy model.
